todorov's narrative theory applied to three games/stories.
Story 1: War of the Worlds(games/book):
Equilibrium: late 1800’s England, everyone is mostly peaceful. Large naval presence across the English Channel.
Disruption/recognition of disruption: Martians arrive on earth in cylinders.
Repair: royal navy attempt to save civilians, torpedo ram destroys 3 Martian fighting machines before being blown up. Martians die to microbes.
New equilibrium: large majority of English population in UK is dead. Red weeds cover the countryside.
Story 2: UNO:
Equilibrium: people distribute cards evenly between each other, sitting in a circle. advanced rules-7 cards allow players to steal each other's decks, 0 cards move all decks one time in the direction of play.
Disruption: one player is remarkably close to saying ‘uno’ and winning.
Repair: player about to win gets hit with 10 +2 cards at once, loses.
New equilibrium: game ends, none of the participants are friends anymore.
Story 3: Star Wars: a new hope:
Equilibrium: Luke Skywalker is living peacefully on his home planet with grandparents.
Disruption: Luke meets obi-wan Kenobi. His grandparents are killed by the galactic empire.
Repair: Luke destroys a superweapon after an intense battle, avenging his grandparents and saving the galaxy.
New equilibrium: the new republic is formed; a fragile peace falls on the galaxy for a brief time.
